US E30 Convertible M-Technic Research

On the Net, it's said that the full M-technics were only made in 04/91. I subscribed to bmwtechinfo.com and used the WebETK to look up the options for certain VIN ranges (one VIN at a time). I chose specific VIN ranges, based on the ETK and TIS databases (which don't match). Some of the VINs which contain the M-Technic option, do not fall into 04/91 ranges listed in the ETK or TIS. The dates in the ETK/TIS don't always match what is on the VIN sticker on the car. I'm trying to find out why this is (know why or have a theory? email me). For this reason, and others, I do not claim this to be a complete list.

None of the full M-technics that I saw had limited slip as an option. I did see it listed as an option on some of the M-technic appearance package cars. This seems to mean that either none of the full M-technics were shipped with limited slip, or they all were (as part of the M Technic Luxusausstattung option). I listed the number with heated seats, as the heated seats was the only option that changed.

First, the 5 speeds. In the VIN ranges for the 5 speed cars, I found 40 VINs that listed the "M Technic Luxusausstattung" option (M Technic Luxury Equipment):

8 MacaoBlau. 5 had heated seats.
14 BrillantRot. Only 3 had heated seats.
18 SterlingSilber. Only 2 had heated seats.

**NOTE** : I've become aware that people are mis-using these numbers. The VIN ranges below are NOT supposed to be all M-Technics. They *are* all of the VIN ranges listed as having a 04/91 production date. There were NON M-Technic convertibles built in 04/91. The 5 speed VIN ranges from the TIS for 04/91, were: EC04910, EC04915, EC04917, EC04922-EC04976, EC04979.
I checked these VIN ranges: EC04909-EC04910, EC04914-EC04917, EC04922-EC05046, EC05060-EC05069.

Automatics. In the VIN ranges for the automatics, I found 56 VINs that listed the "M Technic Luxusausstattung" option (M Technic Luxury Equipment):

10 MacaoBlau. 5 had heated seats.
15 BrillantRot. None had heated seats.
31 SterlingSilber. 6 had heated seats.

**NOTE** : I've become aware that people are mis-using these numbers. The VIN ranges below are NOT supposed to be all M-Technics. They *are* all of the VIN ranges listed as having a 04/91 production date. There were NON M-Technic convertibles built in 04/91. The automatic VIN ranges from the TIS for 04/91, were: EC26274, EC26276, EC26304-EC26305, EC26317, EC26313-EC26314, EC26329, EC26331-EC26335, EC26338-EC26339, EC26341-EC26343, EC26346, EC26349-EC26350, EC26354, EC26359-EC26362, EC26364-EC26365, EC26367-EC26373, EC26375, EC26378-EC26379, EC26382-EC26383, EC26385-EC26671, EC26674-EC26720, EC26724-EC26735, EC26738-EC26739, EC26744-EC26750, EC26752-EC26754, EC26761.
I checked these VIN ranges: EC26385-EC26762 and about 75 other VINs.

In the automatic VIN ranges that I checked, I also found 49 ALPINWEISS2 M-technic appearance and 56 DIAMANTSCHWARZ METALLIC M-Technic appearance. This should "bust" the myth that "Appearance package cars were all 1992" that is heard on the Net.

I have also found some addition M-Technic VINs by talking to owners and watching online. The above numbers only include VINs that I was able to look up in the WebETK. If I include the additional VINs that I have gathered from other sources, the total number is 103. The number is still increasing.
